Focus on housebreaking. This is a challenge because Jamie isn’t giving me much indication that he is about to go. Definitely not my experience with previous dogs. Jamie is really afraid of cars, so much so that he runs/leaps and hits the end of the leash hard – changing to a halter so he won’t hurt himself. Except around cars, he is getting the concept of loose leash walking

Dealing with housebreaking in the rain. I realized that Jamie thinks the rule is “potty only inside” so I devised a way to show him he can indeed potty outside. It worked and Jamie potty’d outside for the first time! First trip to the vet.

It’s frustrating to be making many many trips outdoors in the constant rain. Jamie had peed in his crate last night. The good news is that he is now peeing on the grass sometimes. Hypervigilance is necessary. Jamie still really freaked out by walking anywhere close to car sounds.

Jamie’s Adoption Diary: Day 5

Getting up very early to take Jamie out is working. His crate was dry this morning. He is identifying a particular area as the potty area. The first time he has shown interest in chewing on a toy–a cow hoof is his favorite. He is still very skittish in the kitchen when he hears any squeek like a door opening. Left him in his crate during the day while I went out for a short while – successful: crate was dry when I came back, and Jamie was sacked out.

Housebreaking going well. His crate was dry this morning, but constant attentive supervision is required during the day. He and Raymond played together for the first time. Getting the idea of going to his bed when I tell him to.
